A Q&A with hen rehomer John

John adopted six beautiful hens from us on 18th October 2020. Here, he talks about his experiences adopting ex-commercial hens and watching them settle into their forever home.

When did you choose to adopt ex-commercial hens?

I adopted because until I can open my own animal sanctuary, I will do what I can to help those who need a home. I specifically asked for the ones least likely to be adopted and took six home.

What has been the best and most challenging things about caring for rescue hens?

No challenge. It's been easy and they're so friendly. You care for them, they will beg you for more love. And that's great.

Do you have any advice for anyone considering adopting?

My only advice would be, only take them if you actively want to give them a better home than before. Make sure you are ready for poop duty and be up early every day.

A thank you to all of our hen rehomers

We are so grateful to everyone who has offered one of our ladies a forever home.

Our next hen rescue dates are the 18th April and 23rd May! Follow this link if you are interested in saving the lives of 'spent hens' and able to offer a safe, loving home. If you are new to hen care, check out our Hen Care Starter Guide on the sanctuary shop!

Please also consider donating to our Easter Fundraiser which will allow us to build a temporary hen housing unit and sickbay. Any amount you give helps hens live out their lives in peace, comfort, and safety.
